Alice 150: Skillman Celebrates the Sesquicentennial of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

Published in 1865, it is one of the most translated works of fiction in the world, has never been out of print, and continues to inspire new generations of writers and illustrators. The exhibit features a first edition with Arthur Rackman’s illustrations of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Rackham was one of the first illustrators who offered different and more modern images of the title character. Another featured work is the Pennyroyal Press edition with Barry Moser’s haunting woodcuts that reveal a darker more menacing view of the Alice story. Other highlights in the show include W.G. Paley’s stunning TextArc, a visual representation of Carroll’s text where every line is plotted in a circle, a unique silkscreen interpretation of Advice from a Caterpillar by German book artists, Anna Hellsgard and Christian Gfeller, and the Inky Parrot Press sesquicentennial edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland featuring the work of twenty artists from seven countries that reinvigorates Alice with a twenty-first century perspective.
