Benjamin W. Helffenstein (1818-1879) was born in North Wales, Montgomery, PA and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1841. There are six notebooks in the collection. Two are successive versions of his medical thesis, An Essay on Inflamation [sic] submitted for the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Two additional notebooks contain problems in plane and solid geometry. Included in the collection are two notebooks belonging to his father, Rev. Samuel Helffenstein (1775-1866). One is a notebook containing lectures and problems on dynamics and mechanics. The second notebook is devoted to Jewish antiquities.
