Roberts was a geologist and engineer of mines who resided in Mount Surprise, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Journal consists of notes and diagrams made by Roberts while conducting geological surveys in Carbon, Columbia, Luzerne, and Schuylkill counties of Pennsylvania. Includes a copy of a geological report detailing the coal and iron ore lands of the Big Black Creek Coal Basin. During the course of this survey, Roberts visited, examined, and described Summit and Mauch Chunk coal mines, the Hazleton Coal Company, and the Sugar Loaf coal property. The dates of the main survey are 1846-1848, but contains notes of later surveys, including 1850.
