Edward M. Welles (1832-1914) was born in Wyalusing, PA and attended Lafayette College as a freshman in 1848-49 but later transferred to Williams College. He received an honorary master’s degree from Lafayette in 1871. Welles was an active member of the Lafayette College Alumni Association and the Franklin Literary Society. His son, Edward Jr., graduated from Lafayette in 1916. The Edward M. Welles Letters and Papers include correspondence about student life at Lafayette College in the late 1840s, student essays, an algebra notebook, and speeches given at meetings of the Alumni Association and the Franklin Literary Society. Also includes Sigma Chi and college memorabilia of Edward Welles, Jr.
